Holiness and Constant Prayer
Our sainthood depends on our tur...
Born in Palestine late in the 3rd century, the story of his life was recorded by St. Jerome.
Hilarion received his education in Alexandria where he studied rhetoric and in his early teens he converted to Christianity.
He loved spending time in Church and spent as much of it there as he could, in prayer and contemplation.
By the time Hilarion was 15, he’d made the decision to follow the example of St. Anthony, making his way to the desert where he lived with Anthony for two months.
But, St. Anthony was constantly attracting visitors seeking his wisdom, prayer, and guidance and this was not what Hilarion was looking for.
So, he left and went to an area near Gaza, but he did not stay very long, partly because there were so many thieves in the area.
He struggled mightily with temptation and spiritual dryness but overcame these, through great prayer.
Eventually, Hilarion started getting visitors and followers of his own.
He finally found a place to settle near Cyprus, where he had a series of small huts built to accommodate everyone.
He remained focused on prayer and contemplation but shared his wisdom and direction with any who sought his advice.
Hilarion was also the source of many miracles. He died at the age of 80 in 371.
St. Hilarion, please pray for us.
