Our sainthood depends on our tur...
Born in France in the mid-11th century, he was known for his devotion to The Lord from the time he was a child.
He also had demonstrated a capacity for leadership and by the time he was thirty-three, he was already Bishop of Grenoble, a position he would hold for the rest of his life.
It was a time of turmoil in The Church with abuses running rampant. Pope Gregory VII, who had ordained Hugh, called for all leadership to initiate changes and Hugh was among the first to respond.
He reclaimed Church land in the French Alps, used his abilities as an outstanding preacher to reinvigorate the lay population, and inspired a new generation of religious.
After having a vision, he helped St. Bruno to found a new order, the Carthusians.
At a time when the Pope’s authority was constantly being challenged, he was a fearless defender of The Papacy, and in Grenoble, he was a leader as well, overseeing many civic developments.
He died on this day in 1132.
