The Feast of St. Ignatius of Laconi

Born in Italy at the beginning of the 18th century, his Baptismal name was Francesco Ignazio Vincenso, and his parents, Anna and Mattia, were poor farm workers.

He worked the fields with his parents but when he was 17, he had an illness that nearly took his life. While he was sick he made a promise to commit his life to The Lord but, after recovering, he put that promise on hold at the request of his father who still needed his help in the fields.

However, three years later he had a serious accident while riding a horse, and renewed the promise, fulfilling it by joining the Capuchin Friars.

Taking the name Ignatius, he became well known for his modesty and humility. He was appointed the “official beggar” for the Capuchins, a role he held for four decades.

While he was going about seeking alms, Ignatius would also teach the poor children he encountered and visit with the sick.

He died on this day in 1781.

St. Ignatius of Laconi, please pray for us.
