Holiness and Constant Prayer
Our sainthood depends on our tur...
Born near Naples in 1654, his Baptismal name was Carlo Calostino.
He joined the Franciscans when he was just sixteen and took the name John Joseph of The Cross.
He practiced severe austerity and was the first Italian to follow the reform movement of St. Peter Alcantara.
He was known for his holiness and leadership abilities, which resulted in his superiors giving him the responsibility of starting a new Friary even before he was ordained.
Eventually, John Joseph was named Provincial but he never gave up his daily chores, including washing dishes.
He was known as a great confessor and had the gifts of prophecy and healing.
He died on this day in 1739.
