The Feast of Sts. Pope Soter and Caius

Born in Italy, Pope Soter was elected to lead The Church from 167 to 174 and was known for his great love for the poor.

In a letter he wrote to all of his Churches, Pope Soter said:

“This has been your custom from the beginning; to do good in manifold ways to all Christians and to send contributions to the many Churches in every city. Your Blessed Bishop Soter, has not only carried on this habit but has even increased it by administering the bounty, and by exhorting his brethren who come to Rome loving them as a father would his children.”

Pope Soter was also a staunch opponent of the heresy of Montanism, which declared that a Christian who sinned gravely, could never be Redeemed.

Pope Caius, made it a Church Law that anyone who became a Bishop had to first become a priest. He led The Church from 283 to 297 when he died just before the persecution of Diocletian, who was one of his relatives.

Sts. Pope Soter and Caius, please pray for us.
