Walking into the confessional can feel like a difficult task, but it is the doorway to profound peace. Whether you have been away for a month or a decade, these traditional prayers are designed to help you settle your heart, enlighten your mind, and place your trust in the infinite mercy of Jesus Christ.

1. The Invocation: Prayer to the Holy Spirit

The most important step in preparing for Reconciliation is asking for the light of truth. We cannot confess what we do not see. Pray this traditional invocation to begin your preparation.

The Prayer:

“Come, Holy Spirit, enlighten my mind that I may clearly see my sins, touch my heart that I may be sorry for them, and improve my life that I may walk in Your ways forever. Amen.”

Next Step: Once you have invited the Holy Spirit, use our Adult Examination of Conscience to reflect honestly on your thoughts, words, and deeds.

2. A Prayer for Sincere Contrition

True confession requires more than a list of facts; it requires a “contrite heart.” Use this classic prayer (often attributed to St. Jerome) to stir up a holy sorrow for offending God.

The Prayer

“O Lord, show Your mercy to me and gladden my heart. I am like the man on the way to Jericho who was overtaken by robbers, wounded and left for dead. O Good Samaritan, come to my aid. I am like the sheep that went astray. O Good Shepherd, seek me out and bring me home according to Your will. Let me dwell in Your house all the days of my life and praise You for ever and ever with those who are there. Amen.”

3. The Miserere (Psalm 51)

For 2,000 years, the Church has turned to the words of King David to express the soul’s desire for cleansing. This is perhaps the most powerful scriptural preparation for the Sacrament.

The Prayer: Psalm 51:1-12

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight…

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.”

4. In the Confession Line: Short Aspirations

If you are standing in line and find your mind wandering or anxiety rising, use these “breath prayers” to stay focused on the presence of Christ.

  • “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me, a sinner!”
  • “Lord, that I may see.”
  • “Mother of Mercy, pray for me.”
  • “My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love Thee.”

5. A Prayer for the Priest (Your Confessor)

The priest acts In Persona Christi (in the person of Christ). Praying for him before you enter the confessional is a beautiful way to prepare for the grace of absolution.

The Prayer:

“O Lord, grant to Thy servant, my confessor, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, that he may be a guide to my soul in the way of salvation. Help him to see my heart as Thou seest it, that he may give me the counsel I need to overcome my sins and grow in Thy love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Ready to Enter?

When you step inside the confessional, the priest will eventually ask you to make an Act of Contrition. While many confessionals have the text printed inside, it is best to be prepared.

Common Questions About Preparing for Confession

How long should I spend in prayer before going in?

There is no set time, but 10–15 minutes of quiet reflection and prayer is usually sufficient to perform a thorough examination of conscience and settle your heart.

What if I forget my sins once I’m inside?

Do not worry. If you genuinely forget a sin, it is still forgiven. You can also bring a written list or your phone with your notes into the confessional to help you stay organized.

What should I do immediately after my confession?

After receiving absolution, find a quiet place in the church to perform your penance and offer a prayer of thanksgiving.
