Introduction: The Meaning of the Glorious Mysteries

"The Glorious Mysteries give us a preview, so to say, and a foretaste of the glory that awaits us in the life to come, which eye has not seen and ear has not heard and the human heart has not experienced. For this reason, they most powerfully stimulate Christian fervor and perseverance. Now, and not only in heaven, must we rise in a spiritual sense with Christ from the death of sin and walk in newness of life; now our thoughts and desires must dwell in heaven and delight in the company of angels and saints; now we must prepare our body for its glorified life by giving unstintingly of our physical strength to the service of God. In the light of these mysteries, we recognize the important role that bodily pain and hardship plays in the Christian way of the cross and we learn to mortify the body with all its evil inclinations now so that it may live eternally. Not only in heaven but now, must Mary be our Queen in whose service we glory and the imitation of whose virtues we make the ambition of our lives. Under the influence of the Holy Spirit, these mysteries convey invincible courage, patience, peace, and joy. The Holy Spirit has made us His temples and dwells in us now, so that full of the Holy Spirit we shall rise in glory on the day of resurrection."

First Glorious Mystery: The Resurrection

1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.

2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,

3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.

5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?

6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:

7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”

8 Then they remembered his words.

9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.

10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.

11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

26 And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,

27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

29 Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.

30 And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.

31 Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.

32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.

33 And of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34 And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?

35 And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

36 And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:

37 Because no word shall be impossible with God.

38 And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Points of Reflection: The Resurrection

Victory over death

The Resurrection of Jesus signifies a triumph over the finality of death. We can hold onto the profound hope that death is not the end but the beginning of eternal life with God.

Renewal and transformation

The Resurrection symbolizes a transformative process, as Jesus emerged from the grave in a glorified body. We can imagine a new body without illness, injury, or pain.

Easter 

Easter commemorates the Resurrection as a celebration of joy, hope, and renewal. The Resurrection reveals the hope of the Crucifixion and invites us to grasp this hope in our own suffering.

The promise of new life

Jesus' Resurrection is a promise of new life for the faithful. It invites the possibility of fresh beginnings and second chances in one's own life, no matter the past.

Defeat of sin

The Resurrection is the ultimate defeat of sin. We notice the role of sin in our own lives and ask for forgiveness and redemption through God's mercy. The promise of that gift is revealed to us in Christ who leads us to our own Resurrection, in Him.

Transformation of doubt into faith

Some of Jesus' disciples initially doubted his Resurrection. When Thomas touched Jesus' side and saw the wounds, his doubt was transformed into faith. Personal experiences and encounters can lead to shifts in faith and profound spiritual transformation.

Hope and Comfort

The Resurrection provides hope and comfort to those facing loss and grief. We can hold onto the hope that we will see our loved ones who have passed before us again and share in the joy of the Resurrection together.

Second Glorious Mystery: The Ascension

6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.

11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Points of Reflection: The Ascension

Completion of earthly ministry

The Ascension marks the culmination of Jesus' earthly ministry. It prompts reflection on the significance of his teachings, miracles, and sacrificial death, which laid the foundation for the Church and the Faith.

Promise of the Holy Spirit

Before ascending, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to empower and guide his followers. We are promised the continuity of Jesus' presence, even after his physical departure. 

Transition to Heaven

Jesus bridged the gap between heaven and earth. The Ascension represents the transition from Jesus' earthly presence to his heavenly reign. 

Hope for the future

The Ascension represents hope for a future reunion with Christ in heaven. It reflects the Christian hope of eternal life and the promise of a glorious future with God. 

Symbol of exaltation

Jesus is exalted at the right hand of God as the Lord and Savior. Jesus' return to heaven is an affirmation of his divine origin and relationship with the Father. We are called to share in this unity through faith.

Mystery and transcendence

The Ascension is a mysterious and transcendent event. We contemplate the mystery of faith and the transcendence of divine realities. We're invited to put our faith in the unseen and trust in the promises of Jesus.

Third Glorious Mystery: The Descent of the Holy Spirit

1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Points of Reflection: Descent of the Holy Spirit

Unity

One of the most striking elements during Pentecost is the miraculous ability of the apostles to speak in different languages. This emphasizes the transformative power of the Spirit to bring unity, understanding, and harmony among people who might otherwise be divided by language, culture, or nationality.

Empowerment for mission

The Descent of the Holy Spirit empowered the apostles to boldly proclaim the Gospel. The Holy Spirit is present to equip and empower us for the same mission.

Gifts and fruits of the Spirit

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit that the apostles received are specific abilities or qualities given to individuals by the Holy Spirit for the purpose of building up the Church and serving others. It prompts reflection on the willingness to be receptive to the Spirit's work in one's life. 

The foundation of the Church 

Pentecost is seen as the birth of the Church. The diversity of the early followers of Jesus, brought together by the Holy Spirit, laid the foundation for the inclusive and diverse nature of the Church.

Presence of the Divine

The Descent of the Holy Spirit is a reminder of the presence of the divine within human existence. It encourages individuals to consider how the Spirit's presence can be experienced in the ordinary moments of life.

Fulfillment of prophecy

The event of Pentecost fulfills Old Testament prophecies about the outpouring of the Spirit. We can reflect on the interconnectedness of Old and New Testament teachings and how prophecy is realized in history.

Fourth Glorious Mystery: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin

(44) For which reason, after we have poured forth prayers of supplication again and again to God, and have invoked the light of the Spirit of Truth, for the glory of Almighty God who has lavished his special affection upon the Virgin Mary, for the honor of her Son, the immortal King of the Ages and the Victor over sin and death, for the increase of the glory of that same august Mother, and for the joy and exultation of the entire Church; by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.

Points of Reflection: The Assumption

Mary's role in salvation history

Mary's life, from her Immaculate Conception to her Assumption, played a pivotal role in the unfolding of salvation history.

Divine favor and holiness

Mary's Assumption signifies her unique holiness and favor with God. Mary's life serves as an example of devout faith and obedience that we can model our lives after.

Motherhood and intercession

Mary is a spiritual mother to the Church and all believers. Reflect on the idea of Mary, seated in Heaven, as a loving and caring mother who intercedes on behalf of her spiritual children.

Unity of body and soul

The Assumption emphasizes the unity of the human person—body and soul. This unity is a reflection of God's design and contrasts with secular views that may prioritize one aspect over the other.

Communion of saints

The Assumption reinforces Mary's special place in the communion of saints. Reflect on the role of saints in the life of the Church and how they can inspire and intercede for the faithful, as well as the hope it gives us to strive to be with them in Heaven.

Mary's fiat 

Mary's initial "yes" to God's plan was as much about the Assumption as it was at the Annunciation. Consider how her willingness to say "yes" to God's will can inspire your own response to God's calling.

Fifth Glorious Mystery: The Coronation of Mary

1  A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.

2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.

3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads.

4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born.

5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.” And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne.

6 The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.

Mary's exalted role

The Coronation emphasizes Mary's exalted status in the eyes of God. Reflect on how this depiction underscores her unique role as the Mother of God and Queen of the universe.

Connection to Christ

There's a connection between Mary's Coronation and the Kingship of Jesus. Mary's queenship is intimately tied to her role as the mother of the King of Kings.

Humility and exaltation

There is irony in the exaltation of Mary as Queen because of the humble and obedient life she lived. Consider how humility and exaltation coexist in the journey of faith.

Unity of the faithful

Mary's Coronation unites believers from different cultures and traditions who share a devotion to her as the universal and heavenly Queen.

Hail, holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

(Verse) Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.  

(Response) That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

(Response) O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation.
