December 27 – The Feast of St. John The Apostle

John was the only one of the twelve Apostles who did not leave Jesus during His Passion, standing faithfully and courageously, at the foot of The Cross, as Jesus made him the guardian of His Mother.

Son of Zebedee and Salome, he was called to be an Apostle by Jesus in the first year of Jesus’ public ministry and was also known as: “John of Patmos” and “The Beloved Disciple”.

His older brother was St. James The Greater, also an Apostle, and John is believed to have been the longest-living Apostle, and the only one not to die a martyr’s death.

Along with Peter and James, John witnessed the raising of the daughter of Jarius and the Agony of Jesus in the Garden at Gethsemane.

After the Assumption of Mary into heaven, Church Tradition holds that John went to Ephesus.

He was later banished by the Roman authorities to the Greek Island of Patmos, where he wrote,The Book of Revelation.

St. John is the Patron Saint of love, loyalty, friendships, and authors.

He is often depicted in art with an eagle, signifying the height he rose to in writing His Gospel.

St. John The Apostle and Evangelist, please pray for us.
