The St. Christopher Prayer (Full Text)
A traditional prayer for safe travel, said before a trip or carried on a medal. This prayer is for drivers, flyers, and anyone setting out on a journey.
Saint Christopher, patron of travelers, watch over me on this journey. Guide my steps, protect me from danger, and bring me safely to my destination. Through your example, may I carry Christ with me wherever I go. Amen.
When and How to Pray It
This prayer is most often said just before setting out, before starting the car, boarding a flight, or beginning a road trip. It’s short enough to say from memory, which is part of why it has stayed in use for so long: it fits into the last minute before a journey begins.
Common ways people use it:
- Said once, alone, right before leaving
- Added to morning prayers on travel days
- Kept on a card in the glovebox or a medal on the keychain, so it’s within reach when needed
- Said as a family before a road trip, with each person adding their own intention
Who Was St. Christopher?
According to the tradition, St. Christopher was a man of enormous size and strength who made his living carrying travelers across a dangerous river. One night, he carried a child across who grew heavier with every step, until the child revealed himself to be Christ, and explained that he had been carrying the weight of the whole world.
His name, Christopher, comes from the Greek for “Christ-bearer,” a fitting title, since the legend is really about someone who devotes his strength to carrying others safely through danger. That’s the thread that connects the story to travel: Christopher is remembered not for a miracle he performed, but for showing up to get people safely to the other side.
The St. Christopher Medal
The medal is the most visible way this devotion is carried today, on keychains, dashboards, necklaces, and diaper bags. Wearing or displaying it isn’t a guarantee of safety. The medal is a sacramental. This means that while it doesn’t produce grace on its own, it obtains grace through the Church’s prayer of blessing attached to it, which disposes the wearer to receive and cooperate with God’s grace more readily. Many people say this prayer for the first time specifically because they were given a St. Christopher medal and wanted to know what to pray with it.

O Glorious St. Christopher, you inherited a beautiful name, Christ-bearer, as a result of the wonderful story that while carrying people across a raging stream, you also carried the Child Jesus. Teach us to be true Christ-bearers to those who do not know Him. Protect all of us who travel both near and far, and ask Jesus to remain with us always. Amen.
A Longer Traditional Prayer Before a Journey:
May the Almighty and merciful Lord direct us on the road of peace and prosperity, and may the Angel Raphael be our companion on our journey; so that we may return to our home and loved ones with peace, refreshment, and all joy.
Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us.
Let us pray: O God, Who led the children of Israel safely through the Red Sea, and guided the Wise Men by a star to the Savior; grant us, we beseech Thee, safe journey and favorable weather; so that, under the guidance of Thy Holy Angels, we may safely reach our destination and, in due time, the gate of eternal salvation. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

This one has more weight to it. It’s a good fit for a longer trip, a car blessing, or a pilgrimage, rather than a quick recitation before backing out of the driveway.
