January 15 – The Feast of St. Paul The Hermit

Born in Egypt around 227, he and his older sister lost their parents.

His sister was married and her husband, seeking Paul’s share of their inheritance, betrayed Paul‘s Christian Faith to the authorities. As a result, Paul fled into the desert, finding refuge in a cave near a spring, and stayed there.

Using a nearby palm tree as the source for both his food and clothing, Paul lived solely off this palm tree until he was forty-three, when a raven started bringing him a loaf of bread each day.

Paul was a friend of Saint Jerome, who recorded the story of his life, which was a long one. He lived to be 113!

Toward the end of it, Saint Anthony was told in a dream to visit Paul.

He did and they talked for one whole night and day, blessing, breaking, and sharing a loaf of bread.

When Anthony returned to see Paul a second time he had died. Anthony buried Paul, and according to legend, was assisted by two lions, according to legend.

St. Paul The Hermit, please pray for us.
