January 9 – The Feast of St. Adrian

Born in North Africa in the seventh century, Adrian became an abbot of the monastery near Naples.

On two occasions Pope Vitalian offered him an appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury, but both times he declined and, after the second time, he suggested Theodore of Tarsus who would later become Saint Theodore.

Because Adrian was familiar with the route, the Pope asked him to travel with Theodore to England. Upon arrival, Theodore appointed Adrian Abbot of Saint Peter and Paul Monastery which was later changed to St. Augustine.

Adrian spent 39 years as the Abbot there, and the monastery became known and respected widely as a center for learning.

He died on January 9th at about 708 and its tomb soon became famous for the miracles produced there.

St. Adrian, please, pray for us.
