May 24 – The Feast of St. David of Scotland

Born in 1080, he was the youngest son of Scotland’s beloved Queen, St. Margaret, and her husband, Malcolm III.

Like his mother, David had a great devotion to the Lord and The Blessed Mother growing up. His father and brother were killed during an invasion and Margaret died shortly after. His uncle, Donald, took the throne by force and David and his brothers went into exile in England. In 1113 he married Maude and became an Earl in possession of part of Scotland. By 1124 David was King of all of Scotland.

Like his journey to the throne, his reign was complex but David had a great love for the poor and a desire to grow The Church. He founded many monasteries and started a number of dioceses. At the end of his life, he insisted on deep prayer as he was dying. When it was suggested he just rest he said: “Let me, rather, think about the things of God so that my spirit may set out strengthened on its journey from exile to home. When I stand before God’s tremendous Judgment Seat, you will not be able to answer for me or defend me.”

He died on this day in 1153. St. David of Scotland, please pray for us.
