Marian Apparitions through history — Our Lady appearing to the Faithful

Jump to a Section

Marian apparitions are an important part of Catholic devotional life. God frequently sends Mary, as Mother of the Body of Christ, to evangelize, catechize, work miracles, edify, nurture, and protect the Church. In this way, Mary continues in perfect surrender to the Father's Divine Will to care for the Body of Christ. Below you'll find what a Marian apparition is, how the Church discerns them, and a complete chronological list of Marian apparitions from 40 AD to the present.

What Is a Marian Apparition?

A Marian apparition is a supernatural appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary to one or more people, in which she is seen, and often heard, as though physically present. (The word apparition simply means "appearance.") Apparitions belong to a wider family of what the Church calls private revelation, which also includes interior locutions (hearing her voice within), dreams, and interior visions. Some apparitions are seen by a single visionary; others, like Knock or Pontmain, were witnessed by whole groups.

How Many Marian Apparitions Are There?

Through the centuries and across the world, there have been thousands of alleged Marian apparitions. Some scholars estimate roughly 2,500 reported claims throughout history. Only a small fraction have received formal Church approval: by one widely cited count, 26 apparitions have been approved by the local bishop, and 16 of those have also received recognition from the Holy See. Many more ancient apparitions are "traditionally approved," honored by the Church for centuries through shrines, feast days, and papal devotion. This page covers 37 of the most significant approved and traditionally honored Marian apparitions, in chronological order.

  • Seer: St. James the Apostle
  • Status: Traditionally Approved

According to tradition, on January 2, 40 AD, the Blessed Mother appeared to a discouraged St. James the Apostle on the banks of the Ebro River, where his preaching had borne little fruit. Because Mary was still living on earth with St. John, this was technically a bilocation, yet it is honored as the first Marian apparition in history and the only one to occur during her earthly life. She left a jasper pillar and asked James to build a church on the spot, today's Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar.

Toward the end of the first century, while exiled on the island of Patmos, St. John recorded a vision of "a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars" (Apocalypse 12:1). Strictly speaking, this is not a private apparition but part of Sacred Scripture, and the Church has long seen Mary in this woman, who battles the dragon and gives birth to the Child who will rule the nations. She is also mother of "the rest of her seed, who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ" (Apocalypse 12:17), and her image echoes through many later apparitions.

Many in the community witnessed miracles and took up the Rosary, but Mary also wept over the hardness of hearts and prophesied continued hardship for the country.

From 1981 to 1989, Mary appeared repeatedly to three students at a girls' school in Kibeho, Rwanda, and pilgrims soon streamed to the poor, remote village. Calling herself Mother of the Word, she urged repentance and devotion to the Rosary, especially the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows. She warned that dark times were coming and that the streets would run with blood, a warning fulfilled in the 1994 genocide, and said her message was meant not for Rwanda alone but for the whole world.

In 1983, a grandmother named Gladys began receiving visions and locutions from the Blessed Mother, preceded by the sign of rosaries glowing in homes throughout the town. Mary asked for a forgotten statue blessed by Pope Leo XIII to be recovered and for a sanctuary to be built, and gave instructions for a medal and a white scapular. In 2016, the local bishop recognized the supernatural character of the events of 1983–1990; Gladys reports that the messages continue.

How Does the Church Approve Marian Apparitions?

Because of her care for souls, the Church takes seriously her role in the discernment of alleged prophetic messages, especially as she observes the fruit of each event. Since the Council of Trent, the local bishop has been the first authority responsible for investigating an apparition claim. In the list below, you'll see these approval labels:

Traditionally Approved: Ancient apparitions that predate modern investigation procedures but have been honored by the Church for centuries through basilicas, feast days, papal coronations, and liturgical recognition.

Bishop Approved: The local bishop investigated the events and issued a positive judgment. Vatican approval is not required for an apparition to be considered authentic.

Vatican Approved: Approved by the local bishop and afterward recognized by the Holy See, whether through an official statement or through acts such as a papal coronation of the image, the elevation of the shrine to a basilica, the establishment of a feast day, or the canonization of the visionary.

In May 2024, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued new norms for discerning alleged supernatural phenomena. Under these norms, the Church no longer ordinarily declares an event to be of supernatural origin. Instead, the most positive judgment is a nihil obstat, meaning nothing stands in the way of the faithful embracing the devotion and its spiritual fruits. The norms provide six possible conclusions, from the nihil obstat to a declaration that an event is not supernatural. Approvals granted before 2024 remain in place.

What Do Marian Apparitions Show Us?

The Gospels reveal Christ's infancy, growth, ministry, Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Marian apparitions provide a lens through which to look back on the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church, in her own infancy, growth, and ministry, and even the Church's passion, death, and resurrection in areas that have faced cataclysm, heretical or political upheaval, oppression, and persecution.

Exploring Marian apparitions gives us a glimpse into her work and edifies our soul, reassuring us of her love and fruitfulness and drawing us into a deeper relationship with Christ. If you look through them in order, you are given a chance to see how Christianity spread, the challenges it faced, how Satan fought to destroy the Body of Christ, and how Mary was there to greet it when it rose from the tomb.

You can also see how Mary, ever gentle and faithful, protected and admonished her children when they wandered from the faith. Over and over, she calls for repentance, return to the Sacraments, catechesis, and growth in holiness. She repeatedly echoes the words of her Son: "The time is accomplished, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and believe the gospel" (Mark 1:15).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Marian apparition?

A Marian apparition is a supernatural appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary to one or more people, in which she is seen, and often heard, as though physically present. It is a form of private revelation, which the Church carefully discerns before approving.

How many Marian apparitions are there?

Some scholars estimate about 2,500 reported Marian apparitions throughout history. By one widely cited count, only 26 have received formal approval from a local bishop, and 16 of those have also been recognized by the Holy See. Many more ancient apparitions are traditionally approved through centuries of Church devotion.

What are the 8 Marian apparitions?

There is no official Church list of eight Marian apparitions. The phrase usually refers to shortlists of the best-known approved apparitions, which commonly include Guadalupe, the Miraculous Medal (Rue du Bac), La Salette, Lourdes, Knock, Fatima, Beauraing, and Banneux. The Church's list of approved apparitions is longer, as the full list above shows.

What was the first Marian apparition?

Our Lady of the Pillar is honored as the first Marian apparition in history. According to tradition, Mary appeared to St. James the Apostle in Zaragoza, Spain, in 40 AD, while she was still living on earth.

Which Marian apparitions are approved by the Vatican?

The apparitions recognized by the Holy See include Guadalupe, Šiluva, Laus, the Miraculous Medal, Our Lady of the Miracle, La Salette, Lourdes, Filipov, Pontmain, Gietrzwałd, Knock, Fatima, Beauraing, Banneux, and Kibeho. In each case the local bishop gave the first approval, which is all the Church requires for an apparition to be considered authentic.

Do Catholics have to believe in Marian apparitions?

No. Approved apparitions are private revelations, and the Church teaches that they do not add to or complete the definitive Revelation of Christ; rather, they help the faithful live it more fully in a particular period of history (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 67). Catholics are free to decide how much weight to give an approved apparition in their personal devotion.

What is the only approved Marian apparition in the United States?

Our Lady of Good Help, who appeared to Adele Brise in Champion, Wisconsin, in 1859, is the first and only Marian apparition approved in the United States. The Bishop of Green Bay approved it on December 8, 2010.

Is Medjugorje an approved Marian apparition?

Not in the traditional sense. In September 2024, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith granted a nihil obstat to the spiritual experience connected with Medjugorje, recognizing its many spiritual fruits and permitting the faithful to embrace the devotion. However, the Church did not declare the reported apparitions themselves to be of supernatural origin, which is why Medjugorje carries a different status from the approved apparitions on this list.

Can I visit the sites of Marian apparitions?

Yes. Nearly every approved apparition site on this list is home to a basilica, shrine, or chapel that welcomes pilgrims, and many, like Lourdes, Fatima, and Guadalupe, draw millions of visitors each year.
