Saint Gerard Majella (1726-1755) was an Italian lay brother of the Congregation of the Redeemer who, despite his short life of only 29 years, left an enduring legacy in Catholic tradition. Born in Muro Lucano in the Kingdom of Naples, Gerard became renowned for his extraordinary spiritual gifts, including reported miracles of multiplying food for the poor, restoring life to a boy who had fallen from a cliff, and even walking across water to save fishermen during a storm. He is especially venerated as the patron saint of expectant mothers, childbirth, and unborn children, with countless faithful turning to him for protection during pregnancy and delivery. Canonized by Pope Pius X in 1904, Saint Gerard’s devotion continues through annual novenas and dedicated shrines throughout the world, particularly at the Sanctuary of San Gerardo Maiella in Materdomini, Italy. His feast day is celebrated on October 16, when we honor this humble brother whose compassion and miraculous intercessions have made him one of the most beloved saints for Catholic families.
