The St. Bridget 12-Year Prayer is one of the most profound and life-changing devotions in all of Catholic tradition. Unlike the more common one-year devotion (the 15 Prayers), this practice asks for more than a decade-long commitment to meditating on the seven times Jesus Christ shed His Precious Blood for the redemption of mankind.

Revealed to St. Bridget of Sweden—the 14th-century mystic and co-patroness of Europe—this devotion is a "marathon of grace" that roots the soul deeply in the Passion of Our Lord.

At a Glance: The Devotion Structure

  • Daily Time: Approximately 7–10 minutes.
  • Total Duration: 12 years.
  • Core Prayers: 7 distinct prayers, each preceded by one Our Father and one Hail Mary.
  • Purpose: To honor every drop of Blood Christ spilled from His Circumcision to the Piercing of His Side.

The 5 Magnificent Promises

Our Lord is said to have revealed five extraordinary promises to St. Bridget for those who faithfully recite these prayers for twelve years. While the Church classifies these as private revelations, they have inspired the faithful to persevere in prayer for over 650 years.

  1. Exemption from Purgatory: The soul who prays them will suffer no Purgatory.
  2. Martyr’s Merit: The soul will be accepted among the Martyrs as if they had shed their blood for the faith.
  3. Spiritual Protection for Others: The devotee may choose three others whom Jesus will keep in a state of grace and holiness.
  4. Generational Preservation: No one in the four successive generations of the soul will be lost.
  5. Foreknowledge of Death: The soul will be made conscious of their death one month in advance.

A Note on Faith: If the devotee should die before the 12 years are completed, the Lord accepts the spiritual intention as if the devotion had been finished.

The 7 Prayers of St. Bridget (12-Year Devotion)

To begin, make the sign of the cross.

Opening Prayer

O Jesus, now I wish to pray the Lord's Prayer seven times in unity with the love with which You sanctified this prayer in Your Heart. Take it from my lips into Your Divine Heart. Improve and complete it so much that it brings as much honor and joy to the Trinity as You granted it on earth with this prayer. May these pour upon Your Holy Humanity in Glorification to Your Painful Wounds and the Precious Blood that You spilled from them.

Water from the Side of Christ, wash me clean of all punishments for sin and extinguish the flames of Purgatory for me and for all the Poor Souls. Amen.

The Interior Transformation: Why a 12-Year Commitment?

Beyond the promises, the greatest benefit of this devotion is the profound, steady transformation of the soul. Committing to several minutes of meditation on the Passion every day for over a decade provides a spiritual "scaffolding" that reshapes a person’s entire interior life.

1. The Habit of Holiness

Holiness is the fruit of constancy. By carving a permanent channel for grace in your daily routine, you tame the "wandering mind" and anchor the soul in the presence of God.

2. A Psychological Lens of Hope

Filling the mind daily with the Passion of Christ creates a psychological shift. When we habitually meditate on Christ's suffering, our own personal trials are placed within a redemptive context. This invites us into the way of reparation and fosters a "supernatural optimism" that rests in the knowledge that no pain is wasted.

3. The Cultivation of Virtue

Focusing on the Precious Blood of Christ highlights specific virtues: Humility from the Agony, Patience from the Scourging, and Charity from the Crucifixion. This devotion both highlights the virtues of Christ for our imitation and obtains the grace to exercise them in our lives.

A Checklist for Success

Embarking on a 12-year devotion is a marathon, not a sprint. To help you persevere through the seasons of life, use this "Checklist for Success" to anchor your practice:

  • Establish a "Sacred Anchor": Tie your prayer to a specific daily habit that never changes—such as your first cup of coffee, your commute, or immediately after your evening examination of conscience.
  • The "Intentionality" Rule: If you forget a day, do not fall into scrupulosity. Simply pray the missed prayers as soon as you remember. Remember that the 12-year duration is a measure of your heart's fidelity, not a legalistic stopwatch.
  • Keep a Prayer Log: Mark your "Start Date" and "Projected End Date" in your Bible or a dedicated prayer journal. Seeing the years progress visually provides a powerful sense of spiritual momentum.
  • Pray for the "Three Souls": One of the promises allows you to choose three souls to keep in a state of grace. Write these names down and keep them in your prayer space; let their salvation be your motivation on days when you feel weary.

Devotion to the Saint: Your commitment is part of a larger mission of moral renewal that flows out of the life, work, and example of St. Bridget. Perseverance in this practice can be helped by developing a devotion to her. Learn more about St. Bridget of Sweden.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What if I miss a day?

If you miss a day due to an honest oversight, simply make up the prayer as soon as possible. The devotion is a matter of the heart’s intent and perseverance, not a legalistic requirement.

Is this different from the 15 Prayers of St. Bridget?

Yes. The 15 Prayers are a one-year devotion focusing on the number of blows Christ received. The 12-Year Prayer is a longer commitment focusing specifically on the seven instances of His Blood being shed.

How do I track my progress?

Many find it helpful to record their start date in a Bible or prayer journal.
